奧林巴斯(Olympus)作為相機產業中一家頗負盛名的廠商，幾十年來設計生產過無數優秀的攝影器材。無論是手動時代紅極一時的OM系列，還是數碼時代自成一脈的E系列，奧林巴斯都將他們打造成了精確、牢固、可靠的精品。以致現今攝影界內奧林巴斯的簇擁者遍及世界各地，數量頗為龐大。

1936年，奧林巴斯(Olympus)生產了第一台照相機，是畫面為6×4.5厘米的120折迭式相機。1937年，公司生產了採用127膠卷的焦平面快門照相機Standard，該機具有測距聯動，自動卷片，防重拍，可換鏡頭等功能，被認為是當時的超級照相機。40－50年代，公司主要生產120折迭式和雙鏡頭反光相機。1948年，公司開始生產35毫米鏡頭快門相機。

奧林巴斯光學工業公司的前身是高千穗製作所，創立於1919年，生產顯微鏡和體溫計。1949年公司更名為奧林巴斯光學工業公司。 1960年，奧林巴斯推出了日本第一台快門速度優先的35毫米鏡頭快門自動曝光相機--Olynpus Auto Eye。60－70年代，公司還推出了多種35毫米半幅小型相機，這種相機因體積小、重量輕、拍攝張數最多（為35毫米全幅相機的一倍）而深受好評,並一直暢銷不疲。

Olympus established a tradition of quality manufacturing with the development of its microscope. Olympus continued this tradition through the development of camera lenses, starting in 1934. Two years later the Zuiko lens was born. Zuiko lenses were used in the Semi-Olympus and the Olympus-Six, as well as in the Olympus Reflex 2-lens reflex camera. With these cameras, Olympus laid the foundations of its future role as a camera manufacturer.
